The Sunshine Foundation Progeria Reunions are one of the events that we look forward to each year. Its one of the few times that we can get together with other families that really do know what is happening. As some you already know we were not officially invited to last months reunion because of some political wranglings but we raised enough funds to take the whole family to Orlando and book into the same hotel that the Reunion was being held at. It was a bit of a strange atmosphere, almost subdued, with only 18 kids attending but it was good to see all of the families that were there. You can see some photos here. To me, its a bit of a strange question because we try and lead our lives as normally as possible but then when I stop and think about it I suppose it effects us quite a bit. We have been to the US twice already this year and we have got a trip to Los Angeles and Florida before the end of the year and we certainly wouldn't have done that if Hayley didn't have Progeria. Sometimes I feel a bit guilty when I tell people about all the travelling that we've done but when I look at our photo collection and see how happy Hayley looks when she is at Disney World or swimming in the hotel pool then the guilt drifts away. My name is Mark & I live in Bexhill on Sea, in England. My daughter, Hayley suffers from the genetic disorder 'Progeria'. Progeria is a disease that makes her body age about 8 times faster than ordinary people. It is very rare and there are just 4 kids in the UK with Progeria and only about 40 around the world. The average lifespan of children with Progeria is about 13.... There is no cure....YET!... What's a 'Blogathon' I hear you ask??? Well basically, I update my weblog or 'blog' every half hour for 24 hours to raise money for my charity, The Progeria Research Foundation . The Blogathon is a truly International affair with many other Bloggers from all around the world Blogging for their favourite charities and we are all linked by webrings, chatrooms and messengers like ICQ, Yahoo Instant Messenger and AIM. The Progeria Research Foundation (PRF) were mainly responsible for identifying the gene that causes Progeria earlier this year and I am a close friend of the president, Audrey Gordon as well as Dr. Leslie Gordon (PRF's medical director) and Dr. Scott Berns, who also have a son with Progeria, so as you can imagine this is a charity very close to my heart. This is my 3rd year blogging for PRF and have I raised around $1000 each year but with your help I really want to smash that total this year.
